Statuary moulds, Chalcography (Copper engraving)

Rich with an experience of more than two centuries, the moulding workshop - created by the Louvre in 1794 - conserves and operates a fund of more than 12,000 mussels and models from the large French and European collections. Thanks to the unique know-how of Statuary moulders, the workshop revives the greatest masterpieces of the sculpture through high quality reproductions. Practical craft and advanced techniques, it combines the requirement of tradition with excellence of modernity.

Since 1797, the Chalcography workshop has been responsible for to store and print several thousand engraved coppers belonging to collections of the Louvre. Once sheltered under the roofs of the Louvre Palace, the presses are now housed in the Art Workshops GrandPalaisRmn Saint-Denis. Specialist artisans are working on printing prints to from original plates. Depositaries of traditional know-how, they maintain and transmit gestures that are no longer performed elsewhere. To this title, GrandPalaisRmn print shop is recognized as the conservatory of this art trade. Each year, the Chalcography of the Louvre is enriched with works engraved by artists contemporaries: Kiki Smith, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Marine Wallon, Pierre Alechinsky, Annette Messenger ...
