La poterie du Mesnil de Bavent

Manufacture of enamelled or unglazed terracotta

The Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent perpetuates a unique artisanal know-how around the manufacture of enamelled or unglazed terracotta headset. Each piece is entirely handcrafted using traditional techniques such as stamping and shooting. The headpiece, an iconic decorative and architectural element of the roofs, consists of several attached elements - the roof tile, central element and crowning - assembled on a metal rod attached to the roof structure. Through these achievements, the house values and transmits an ancestral artisanal heritage at the service of French architecture.

Enter the world of pottery

Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent is a craft enterprise located not far from the village of Bavent, in Normandy. It was founded in 1842 by Pierre Comptet, who began by making tiles and bricks. Over the years, the pottery has diversified and now manufactures a wide range of products, including finials, punches, ridge finials, decorative elements for facades, and small-scale animal subjects.

Poterie du Mesnil de Bavent has been perpetuating a regional tradition and the transmission of know-how on the same site for almost two centuries. Tradition, but with a modern twist: cobs are not just for roofing, they've become sculptures.
